![]() Most 1996 and newer vehicles under 8,501 pounds are equipped with a state-of-the-art on-board monitoring system known as On-Board Diagnostics (OBD). Last month Check Engine light shows up again. One of the three converters was bad and has been replaced. The vehicle was driven and the catalyst monitor completed within 6 minutes and per the mode06 data passed with flying colors. The Heated Catalyst, Secondary Air System, A/C Refrigerant monitors showing " Not Available " and Evaporative System monitor showing " Incomplete ". The "Italian Tune-Up" The "Italian Tune-Up" is a common fix for a range of automotive problems, including a clogged catalytic converter. I've got a hondata flashpro, which shows my car's emissions readiness (in addition to letting me load custom fuel maps, etc-but i'm only using it for diagnostics at the moment and i'm on stock fuel map). Sounds like the Subaru has an incomplete "Catalyst" monitor. Drive the vehicle at a steady speed of 55 MPH for 10 minutes. Find the part called a spark plug defouler. The upstream O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold reacts to the exhaust gases as they exit the engine. Also note that one incomplete monitor can prevent other monitors from running. The catalytic converter monitor continues to be "not ready" for a smog inspection. OBD-II monitors catalytic converter efficiency, misfire, EGR, fuel trim, oxygen sensors and purge functions. ![]() The front 2 sensors should be switching pretty often, and the rears should switch very little. Toyota has various OBD2 readiness monitors for emissions testing, and by conducting a Toyota Drive cycle, you can activate and ready the Toyota ODBII sensors. OBDII monitors catalytic converter efficiency, misfire, EGR, fuel trim, oxygen sensors and purge functions. Let's see some catalytic converter symptoms. By the way, cruise control is often the best way to complete a catalyst monitor. On an old Celica we had you even had to remove/ reinstall the gas cap. But it makes sense now. This system continually monitors tracks and stores information about the emission control devices and other engine-related components. So then I started wondering where did you get the stock map to flash. So I was left confused because the only way a regular person like us could do that is with an OTS tune using NHD or bm3. My initial thought was that you removed the tune yourself. I know that's probably the most layman's explanation of what happened, so probably doesn't help much. I don't have the technical knowledge or experience to say, so I may be misrepresenting what actually occurred to get the car to pass smog. I didn't get into too much detail with Frank about it. So, I don't know if he removed, reflashed, or overwrote the previous tune. Then I returned to TTFS and got the car back to a 93 octane stage 1 tune. He "flashed" the car with a "stock" or "stock like" tune which allowed me to get through the smog test. Frank told me that it definitely had a tune and that he could "put me back to stock" to get through smog. Some research led me to TTFS in Maryland. After trying to get it smog tested and failing, I received multiple recommendations to take the car to a tuner to see if it had a tune. I bought the car used from a dealer and did not have any information on the previous owner or mods on the car. To be honest, I am not 100% sure how that part works. Also, I have read where ppl said they passed emissions with a stage 1 tune. What kind of tune did it have where you were able to just remove it? I assume you cannot just remove a bm3 tune without a license from them. I had an issue with OBD readiness on another car that was tuned and needed to remove the tune for smog. Any advice or help is appreciated, thanks. No CEL, just Fuel System Monitor incomplete at the emissions shop and on my OBD2 scanner. I can't imagine more than 1000, but I'm not certain. My plan is to continue to drive more miles, but I don't know how many miles it could require for the fuel system monitor to conduct its testing. I've tried to research the issue here and generally online, but haven't found a solution. I don't know if the previous owner had a tune. Definitely no exhaust, DP, intake, HFC or any visible performance mods. All other monitors changed to ready within 250 miles. I've driven about 650 miles since last reset. The fuel system monitor won't go from incomplete to ready, so it cannot be tested. I've been trying to get it smog tested so I can complete registration in Virginia.
